An investigation that began on Dec. 25 when a man was shot on the east side of Pine Bluff led to the arrest of a man who allegedly allowed the shooting suspect to hide in his house.
Calvin Hence, 34, was arrested Monday. During a court hearing Tuesday, prosecutors said Hence let Randy Carter, 22, hide in his house after Carter allegedly shot Marquez Strong, 21, after a confrontation in front of 315 E. 21st Ave. Strong was taken to a Little Rock hospital and died Dec. 31.
According to an affidavit from Detective Temmiothy Johnson, police received information that Carter was at a house in the 4800 block of West 7th Avenue and Carter was found in a rear bedroom and arrested.
Johnson said Hence used the name Carnell Allen when he was initially questioned and told police another person had brought Carter to his house and dropped him off.
When that other person was interviewed Dec. 28, he said he got a call from Hence inviting him to come to Hence’s house and when he got there, Carter was in the bedroom.
Carter was not able to be interviewed until Dec. 28 because, Johnson said in the affidavit, Carter was intoxicated.
When he was interviewed, he allegedly told police he had gone to the other person’s house and was told he could not stay there so he went to Hence, who he knew as “Pooky,” and Hence allowed him to hide.
Carter was originally charged with first-degree battery in connection with the shooting of Strong, and those charges are expected to be upgraded to murder when the investigation is completed.
Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $15,000 bond Tuesday for Hence after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with hindering apprehension or prosecution, a Class C Felony.
