Use propagation to multiply plants for free

Starting new plants from plants you already have is a great way to multiply your plant-buying dollars, writes Janet Carson in HomeStyle.

You can save seeds, take cuttings, divide an existing plant, layer or graft. Some techniques require more expertise and some plants are easier to propagate but if you own the mother plant, you can try again if you don’t succeed.

Many plants set seeds in fall, and you can harvest those now. All plants that produce seeds can be grown from seeds, but some seeds have longer dormancies and some have specific requirements for germination.

To find out how to cut, stratify, scarify, layer, divide and graft new plants from ones you already own, see Carson’s suggestions in Saturday’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
