— TRACK AND FIELD ASU women win Sun Belt indoor title

Arkansas State’s women won the Sun Belt Conference indoor title Monday in Jonesboro.

The women finished with 122.5 points to win their first team title in 13 years. UALR’s women did not score.

Sharika Nelvis led the Red Wolves by winning the 55-meter hurdles in 7.68 seconds, 200 and 5 dashes in 23.74 and 6.87 seconds, respectively. Kristina Aubert won the 5,000 in 17:09.96.

Julia Agawu won the shot put with a throw of 62 feet, 9 1/2 inches. Alexandra Pevtsova won the pole vault by clearing 12-7 1/2.

Arkansas State’s men finished third with 104 points while Western Kentucky won with 139 points. UALR’s men scored 24 points.

Three Red Wolves finished in the top five in the heptathlon, led by Ehtan Turpen (5,287 points) and Will Oliver (5,182) finishing first and second while Thomas Ligon (5,019) was fifth.

Justin Whitfield won the 55 in 6.35. Chris Nicaslo won the shot put at 63-4 3/4.

UALR’s Shaun Koehn finished fourth in the 5,000 in 14:53.84.

FOOTBALL Harding’s Powell shines at Combine

Former Harding defensive end Ty Powell, 6-2, 249 pounds, ran a 40-yard dash in 4.64 seconds, which was the seventh-fastest time among defensive linemen in his group. He also did 28 repetition at 225 pounds in the bench press and had the second-best vertical leap of 37 inches and second-best broad jump of 10 feet, 2 inches among defensive linemen.

Powell was given a grade of 68 by NFL talent evaluators, which indicates that he could be drafted between the fourth and seventh rounds of the NFL Draft.

BASKETBALL UALR’s Ford named player of the week

UALR junior Taylor Ford has been named Sun Belt Conference player of the week.

In a 51-47 victory over Florida International, Ford had career bests in points (20) and rebounds (10), and hit 8 of 12 shots from the field. Ford followed that up with a team high 11 points at Florida Atlantic in a 60-43 victory. She also had five assists and five rebounds.

GOLF Cook 2 under, Razorbacks 4th

Arkansas men are in fourth place after two rounds of the John Hayt Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla.

North Florida, the tournament host, holds a 12-stroke lead heading into the final day. Duke is second at 5 under par and is followed by Central Florida (9 over) and Arkansas, North Texas and No. 7 Florida, which are all tied at 11 over.

UALR women tied for second

UALR senior Emelie Westrup sits atop the leader board of the South Alabama Women’s Invitational by a stroke after firing an opening-round 1-over-par 73 on Monday at Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. UALR is tied for second overall with a combined opening-round score of 22-over 310, four shots back of host South Alabama.

UCA women ninth after first round

The Central Arkansas women are ninth after the first round of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Classic being played at Corpus Christi Country Club.

The Bears shot a 332 in the first round, with the second round suspended due to high winds. The tournament has been shortened to two rounds, with the second beginning at 8:15 a.m. Central today. Lamar and Missouri State are tied for first place at 317.

UCA senior Julia Roth is tied for seventh place after shooting a 78 (38-40).
