Fire Sends Winslow Man To Hospital

A Winslow man was hospitalized Friday after his mobile home burned to the ground in a remote area of Washington County.

William Joseph Lewis, 68, was taken by helicopter to Washington Regional Medical Center then transferred to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. Washington County Fire Marshal Dennis Ledbetter said Lewis’ injuries related to smoke inhalation.

The fire at 10134 Colt Road west of Winslow was reported about 7 a.m. Friday by a neighbor who heard something, looked outside and saw Lewis’ trailer engulfed in flames, Ledbetter said.

The neighbor found Lewis lying in the driveway.

Ledbetter said there was a delay in reporting the fire because there was no cell phone service in the area and the neighbor had to leave, go up the hill and call 911. When emergency crews arrived, they found Lewis had apparently walked a short way up the hill as well.

The cause of the fire wasn't obvious and is being investigated, Ledbetter said. Investigators were waiting for the scene to cool down Friday afternoon.
