Farmington Shakes Off Early Miscues

— Gentry took advantage of a pair of early turnovers to take a 14-0 lead, but Farmington finally held on to the ball and got the game firmly in hand soon there after.

Running back Spencer Boudrey and quarterback Keaton Austin formed a tough 1-2 combination help Farmington claim a 61-20 victory in 4A-1 Conference football Friday night.

Boudrey rushed for 192 yards on just 12 carries with two touchdowns, including a 74-yard run that helped fuel the Farmington offense after its slow start.

But it was all Gentry early as the Pioneers converted a Cardinals fumble into a 16-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jarod Cousins for a 7-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Cousins snatched the ball from a Farmington receiver and returned it 18 yards for another score.

Why The Cardinals won

Farmington shook off three lost fumbles in the first quarter to score 41 first-half points and take control. Running back Spencer Boudrey rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Keaton Austin threw for 139 yards and three TDs.

Why The Pioneers lost

Gentry turned a pair of Farmington turnovers into early touchdowns, but struggled to move the ball consistently.

Farmington coach Mike Adams acknowledged his team struggled early, but was able to weather the early storm.

“We just made a couple bonehead plays, gave up 14 points,” Adams said. “The game’s not four minutes old and we’re down 14-0. But our guys kept their composure and we found some things we could do. We just had to settle down and execute. Once we did that we were OK.”

Sophomore Josh Blew returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to get Farmington on the scoreboard and stem the Pioneers momentum. Gentry (1-3, 0-1 4A-1 Conference) would not score again until the fourth quarter.

Farmington (4-0, 1-0) then got its offense going, scoring 47 unanswered points to turn the game into a rout.

Austin completed nine of 10 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns, including a 15-yarder to Boudrey. The duo also hooked up for a two-point conversion.

Austin’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Michael Ingram with 31 seconds left in the opening quarter gave the Cardinals a lead they would no relinquish.

Gentry coach Brian Little said he enjoyed the strong start and could have had more points.

“I was pleased with the way we started,” Little said. “We have a wide open trick play that worked and we overthrew it. But our kids were prepared and came out strong. The second half we stalled out and their weapons got loose.”
