Award semifinalists named

The Brandon Burlsworth Trophy selection committee announced Tuesday the 10 semifinalists for the 2012 award, which is given to the most outstanding college football player in America who began his career as a walk-on.

The semifinalists are Brigham Young defensive lineman Ezekial Ansah, Kansas State center B.J. Finney, Oregon State defensive tackle Andrew Seumalo, Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin, San Jose State tackle David Quessenberry, UCLA safety Andrew Abbott, Louisville tackle Alex Kupper, Michigan safety Jordan Kovacs, Nebraska guard Spencer Long and Wisconsin receiver Jared Abbrederis.

The trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, the former Arkansas Razorbacks All-America offensive lineman who died in an automobile accident 11 days after being taken by the Indianapolis Colts as the 63rd overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft.

Siloam Springs forward signs

Siloam Springs forward Payton Henson signed a national letter of intent Tuesday to play basketball for Tulane.

“It’s good to know that I’m officially part of that family [at Tulane],” Henson said. “I’m readyto get there.”

Henson, 6-8, averaged 24.7 points and 10.6 rebounds a game as a junior after averaging 20.2 points and 9.6 rebounds his sophomore season. He was named to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s All-Arkansas team as a junior and was a member of its all-sophomore team.

  • NWA Media GOLF Cappelen finishes second

Arkansas junior Sebastian Cappelen shot an 8-under-par 63 to finish second Tuesday at the Western Refining College All-American in El Paso, Texas.

Cappelen had 8 birdies, 1 eagle and 2 bogeys Tuesday and finished at 13-under 200 for the tournament, one stroke behind UNLV’s Kevin Penner, who finished at 199.

SWIMMING AND DIVING UA’s Mayfield honored

Arkansas freshman Anna Mayfield was named the SEC’s freshman of the week on Tuesday after her performance at the Houston Cougar Swimming and Diving Invitational, where she recorded two school records.

Mayfield’s banner weekend was highlighted by her school-record time of 1 minute, 55.18 seconds in the 200 backstroke. She made the final in the 200 back and placed third overall.
