— Paul Woodruff, dean of undergraduate studies at the University of Texas, will speak at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville on March 12-13.

Woodruff will speak on “Renewing Reverence” at 7 p.m. March 12. A sweets and hors d’oeuvres reception will start at 6 p.m.

The dean will speak on “The Art of Listening” at 10 a.m. March 13.

“Reverence, which grows from a sense of awe, is the antidote to overweening pride,” Woodruft says. “Reverence is not unique to any religious tradition, but appears to be universal, a possible bond across religious differences. It is expressed in silence, in ceremony, and in many art forms. It is easily lost; hence the importance of renewing it from time to time.”

Woodruft has taught at the University of Texas since 1973, with an academic specialty in ancient Greek philosophy. His book “Reverence: Renewing a Forgotten Virtue,” was published by Oxford University Press in 2001 and recognized by the Christian Science Monitor among notable nonfiction for the year. “First Democracy: Facing the Original Ideas” was published in 2005. “The Ajax Dilemma: Justice, Fairness, and Rewards” will be published this year.

Woodruft’s talk is sponsored by the McMichael Lecture Series at St. Paul’s. There is no charge. Child care will be provided in the church nursery.

St. Paul’s is located at 224 N. East Ave. For more information, visit www.stpaulsfay.org or call 442-7373.
