— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1910

Mayor W.R. Duley returned rather unexpectedly yesterday afternoon from Roswell, N.M., where he has been since the latter part of August for his health. Although the mayor’s leave of absence was not up until November 7, he said that his health was so much improved that he decided to return at once. He said that the cough that troubled him when he left Little Rock had entirely disappeared, and that he believed that he would not be obliged to leave Little Rock again until his term expired.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1960

The controversy over a garbage dump on Mabelvale Pike raged on today as the Pulaski County health officer and the owner of the dump disagreed with area residents by stating, “The dump is not a health hazard.” The dump, located approximately 1-2 miles from the intersection of Fair Park and Asher, has been the center of controversy since its establishment there early this summer. Residents of the area have voiced objections to the dump because, as one woman put it, “of the smelland health hazards that it presents.”

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 1985 FORREST CITY - Officials of the Sanyo Manufacturing Company said Friday an agreement reached with union negotiators Thursday night could end the threeweek-old strike for most workers by Tuesday. Both sides declined to discuss specifics of the agreement. However, Wilfred Banks, president of Local 1106 of the International Union of Electrical, Electronic and Salaried Workers, said he would urge union members to ratify the contract.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 26, 2000

In early August, any hope held by regional transportation planners that central Arkansas could avoid federal environmental sanctions vaporized when ozone levels exceeded national standards. According to preliminary data from the state Department of Environmental Quality, the region’s seasonal ozone average for 2000 hit 0.093 parts per million. With readings for 1998 and 1999, the three-year average totals 0.088 parts per million. The federal limit on ozone is 0.080 parts per million.
