Pulaski County had the largest delegation of any county in the state of the annual convention of the Arkansas State Teachers Association, which was held at Hot Springs during the first of the week, according to Prof. R.O. Hall, superintendent of the Little Rock schools, who returned last night from the convention. “Pulaski county’s delegation number 74” stated Prof. Hall, “Garland county was next with 69 and I think Sebastian was third.” 50 YEARS AGO Dec. 31, 1959

Increasing federal assistance to construction of primary and secondary roads “will be one thing” the Public Works Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee will look into in 1961 along with the financing and progress of interstate highway construction, the Arkansas Highway Users Conference was told yesterday. Arkansas’ 2nd district Congressman Wilbur D. Mills of Kensett, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, made it plain to the conference yesterday that he wants the interstate construction kept on a pay as you go basis and his stand received applause.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 31, 1984 JONESBORO - Sen. John F. Bearden of Blytheville, the new president pro tempore of the Arkansas Senate, said Sunday the Legislature will turn back any challenge to Gov. Bill Clinton’s education-reform package. Bearden said an effort would be mounted in the upcoming regular session of the General Assembly to weaken the package of measures passed in the 1983 special session on education.

War Memorial Stadium commissioners approved the final terms Thursday of a $3.5 million bond issue to fund renovations of the north end-zone concourse and of seats on the east and west sidelines. It will be the second phase of a fourpart plan to dramatically overhaul the Little Rock stadium. Eventually, War Memorial boosters hope to add an upper deck, 11,000 seats, sky boxes, fancy new concession stands and other amenities.
