PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Vote No On Bill For Legalizing Marijuana

I’ve read with interest the letters that extol the benefits, mostly anctedotal and not scientific, (of medical marijuana), but would like to tell the opposing viewpoint.

Through the years, we’ve had family members and acquaintanaces who were users, and what we’ve seen it do is destroy normal ambition and common sense. My own late brother, who had so much potential in life, starting out as a newscaster and DJ, but ending up not even being motivated enough to go to work and take care of his family. He started out as a casual user, a recreational user, he said. Then, his behavior changed. He would hold up a glass vase, and stare at it for hours, almost as if in a trance. He ended up ruining his life, leaving a sad legacy of heartbroken children who are just now starting to rebuild their lives.

There may be people who will stick to the medically prescribed dosage, but look what has happened in California, where the “potheads” line up to get treated for their “headaches,” etc. The sad consequence is that many are introduced to a drug that impairs judgment and is minimally psychologically addictive. Recent scientific studies have shown it to be more injurious to one’s body than cigarette smoking.

We have enough social ills in this world, don’t we?

Do we really need to add to them by legalizing a dangerous substance? Voteno to legalizing marijuana.

ROMNEY FLAWED CANDIDATE

Buddy Rogers (Sept. 30) thinks the mainstream media are biased for Barack Obama and against Mitt Romney. The problem is not the media, but Romney, who is a 24/7 gaffe machine.

Does it show bias when the media play videos of Romney over the last decade showing how he has changed his stance on every issue?

Is it unfair when the media play videos of Romney’s awkward syntax and his goofy attempts to relate to ordinary people?

Does it show malice when the media show Romney evading every request to name a single thing he would do to reform the tax code or enhance revenue?

Is there some sinister plot when the media show Romney characterizing 47 percent of Americans as moochers and saying that his job is not to worry about them? Romney has no core convictions and needs a personality transplant.

No one likes him. He is the most fl awed candidate in living memory.

If Buddy Rogers and his friends can’t face reality, they can always turn to the fantasy world of Fox News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
