One man arrested after Fayetteville officer almost shot

FAYETTEVILLE -- An officer was almost shot responding to a suicide call late Friday night, according to a preliminary report.

An officer went to 2517 N. Candlewood Drive after a woman said she left the home with her children because John Phillips, 37, was suicidal. Officers walked through the front yard of 2486 N. Candlewood Drive and tried to find Phillips, according to the report.

The officer reported hearing voices from 2517 N. Candlewood Drive, but couldn't see anyone.

While trying to get behind a tree, the officer heard a gun shot from 2517 address and felt the wind pushed from the traveling bullet as it went past the top, left side of their head. The officer didn't see Phillips fire the round, according to the report.

When officers reached the house, they found a spent 12-gauge Remington birdshot shell on the front step of the porch and a 12-gauge Remington shotgun in one of the children's rooms.

Phillips was arrested in connection with aggravated assault.
