Don was born in 1931 in Cale, Ark. to Bascom T. and Era L. Steed. He was the third of four children and traveled with his family to live in a tent city in Casa Grande, Ariz. during the Great Depression. Having grown resilient and determined in his younger years, Don pursued an extensive education, which included one year at Southern State College, Ark. before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951. As he was stationed in one location after another, he attended Arkansas A&M and then Washington University for Dental School. During this time, two more children were born. His family of five moved from Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, to Istanbul, Turkey then to Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Dr. Donald Steed was now an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and a full colonel in the United States Air Force. His family was stationed at Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico next, followed by Wright Patterson in Dayton, Ohio. During this time Don also served on dental missions in Africa and the Dominican Republic. In 1975, Don and Pauline returned to Texas where he served as a professor and the coordinator of resident training at multiple medical schools for over a decade before entering private practice in Kerrville, Texas where he worked for the next 16 years. Throughout his career, he was awarded numerous merits and honors–the USAF Meritorious Service Medal, the USAF Citation for Outstanding Diagnostic Acumen, and the USAF Legion of Merit to name but a few. Throughout his life he steadfastly served God, his family, his country and those in need.
