Gladys English Russell, age 91, of Fayetteville died Sept. 24, 2014, in Maumelle after a brave and prolonged struggle with ovarian cancer. She was born June 26, 1923, in Warrenton, Ga., and was married to Lt. William L. Russell in 1943 at Fort Benning, Ga. They had four children. As a loyal wife to a career Army officer, she raised her children in eight states from California to Georgia, as well as Munich, Germany, and Athens, Greece. Upon her husband's retirement in 1965, the family moved to Fayetteville where she resided for 49 years. She was active in the Prairie Grove Assembly of God Church and the Calvary Baptist Church in Fayetteville. An avid knitter, several of her creations won first prize at the Washington County Fair. She knitted over 200 afghans and donated many to the coaches at the University of Arkansas and to friends and family. She was a loving Christian mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a wonderfully kind and generous person to everyone she met. Her favorite word was "kind" and that was the perfect description for her. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Emily English; her husband, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) William L. Russell; a son, James E. Russell; a daughter-in-law, Lynn R. Russell; four brothers, Leon, Emmett, Welcome and Malcolm English; and two sisters, Eugie English and Naomi Burgundy. She is survived by three children, Bill Russell (Mary) of Maumelle, Vicki White (Dennis) of Jonesboro and Phyllis Temple (David) of Couer d'Alene, Idaho; four grandchildren, Diana Corder (Dallas) of Jonesboro, Leslie Emberton (Chuck) of Cabot, Brooke Taylor (Trevor) of Russellville and Jenny Temple of Columbia, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Haley Emberton of Cabot and Gemma Taylor of Russellville; a former daughter-in-law, Sherry G. Russell; sisters-in-law, Hazel Rainwater and Janelle Russell of Fort Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at Moore's Chapel, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Moore's Chapel. Burial will be at the Fayetteville National Cemetery. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Ora Lewis of Home Hospice for her special care and love for their mother. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
