Duffey Allmon Carter

Col. Duffey Allmon Carter, USAF Ret., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014. A resident of Lowell, Ark., he was born in Virginia. He attended the University of Akron where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. In 1941, Duffey began his military service when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and entered basic flight training in PT-19s at Grider Field in Pine Bluff, Ark., where he met and later married Betty Jo McClellan. He was assigned to the 15th Air Force, 449th Bomb Group, 718 Squadron based in Grottaglie, Italy, during WWII. He piloted his B-24 (affectionately named "Ll'l Butch") on missions that included Polesti and Bucharest; he then flew the Berlin Airlift after the war. His service continued for more than 30 years, including the Korean War and being based in Udorn, Thailand, with the 7th ACCS Cricket Division. He graduated from Command & Staff, USAR Air University at Maxwell AFT, Alabama. Col. Carter courageously served his country with quiet dignity and retired from service in 1973. He and his wife, Betty, settled in Northwest Arkansas where he served on the board of Northwest Arkansas Horse Show Association. Duffey selflessly dedicated himself to caring for his wife in the final years of her life until her passing in 2009. He is survived by his daughters, Daphne Carter of Lowell, Ark., and Barbara Carter Whitehead and husband, John, of Cresson, Texas; grandchildren, Jonathan Christopher Whitehead and Amelia Johnson. Colonel Carter is also survived by a host of extended family members, including his sister, Alpheratte Clark of El Paso, Texas; and Mrs. Patty Stone and husband, Mike, of Akron, Ohio; and many friends that loved him dearly. He will be greatly missed by all. A reception will be Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lowell Senior Center, 704 E. Monroe Ave., Lowell, Ark.
