Ruth Miller Gates

Ruth Miller Gates, of North Hill Needham died on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham. She was 95 years old. Born and raised in Brookline, Mass., she married her late husband, Richard Gates, and they lived for a short while in Santa Monica, Calif., where their first daughter, Robin, was born. Ruth and Richard then returned to the greater Boston area where they lived for the rest of their lives. Ruth received her A.B. degree from Radcliffe College, 1941; with a double major in classics and fine arts. While at Radcliffe, she sang in the Radcliffe Choral Society, served as President of the Society, and sang on more than one occasion with the Boston Symphony. Mrs. Gates was very active in the First Baptist Church on Needham for a number of years, in particular serving as Superintendent of the Sunday School. She was a Brownie Scout and Cub Scout leader and served for many years on the Friendship Committee of the New England Baptist Hospital, and chaired the committee for a time. The Beloved wife of the late Richard Gates, she was the Loving mother of Robin Gates Elliott, and her husband James A.M. Elliott, of Arlington, Va., Stephen Gates and his wife, Fliece Ripley Gates, of Fayetteville, Ark., and Constance Gates Carter and her husband, David Carter, of West Chester, Pa. Dear Grandmother of Mary Gates Callahan and her husband Joshua Callahan, of Springdale, Ark., and Emily Gates, of Columbus, Ohio. Great-grandmother of Bentley Callahan and Sadie Callahan. Also survived by one niece and two nephews. Private interment will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery. A reception in Ruth's memory will be held on Friday, May 3, at 4 p.m., at North Hill, 865 Central Ave, Needham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Hill Employee Recognition Fund.
