B-17 to make North Little Rock visit, honor war veteran

A Boeing B-17 will visit the North Little Rock Municipal Airport on Wednesday to give a World War II veteran a plane ride over the city to honor his service.

The crew of the "Yankee Lady" will offer self-guided tours and Air Adventure rides at the airport located at 8202 Remount Road, according to a news release from the city. The estimated time of arrival is 9 a.m. The B-17 will be at the west side of the airport.

World War II veteran Sgt. Bill Toombs, a former flight engineer and top turret gunner, will get a VIP plane ride at 2 p.m.

Self-guided ground tours will be $8 for those age 15 and above, $3 for children age 6 to 15, and free for kids younger than 6, the release states.

Air Adventure rides on the plane will be available from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The 30-minute experience costs $475 per person.

A B-17 Air Adventure can be arranged by visiting yankeeairmuseum.org and clicking on "Fly With Us."

Police's response to protests touted

The Arkansas State Police presented the North Little Rock Police Department with a plaque of appreciation Monday for its work during protests earlier this year.

Bill Bryant, the director of the state police, said he wanted to thank the North Little Rock Police Department for its immediate response when called to action by Gov. Asa Hutchinson to "form a unified law enforcement front" in June. The department received the award during Monday's City Council meeting.

Demonstrations were held in late May and early June at the state Capitol building after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The Little Rock demonstrations, which stretched for more than a week and involved hundreds of participants, were among marches that took place in cities nationwide to protest police killings of Black people.

Hutchinson called in the National Guard and set a curfew in the city, citing vandalism and property damage.
