Girl, 14, charged in stabbing death of mother's ex-boyfriend

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- A 14-year-old girl has been charged in the stabbing death of a former boyfriend of her mother in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Authorities say the teenager is charged with second-degree murder, burglary, arson, theft and conspiracy in the September death of 58-year-old Fred Boote Jr. in Wilkes-Barre.

Luzerne County prosecutors say the girl's mother had dated Boote and they lived in his home earlier this year until he asked them to move out at the end of July.

They allege the girl and 31-year-old Reynaldo Mercado planned to rob Boote but Mercado ended up stabbing him. The two fled but were found the next day in West New York, New Jersey.

The defendants declined comment as they were escorted out Friday; the public defender's office, listed as representing Mercado, was unavailable Saturday.
