Voters OK'd Arkansas casino measure, but questions remain

Arkansas voters have approved a state constitutional amendment that allows four casinos in the state, but questions remain about their opening.

The amendment specifies two casinos at established electronic gambling and racing tracks at Southland Park in West Memphis and Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

Southland and Oaklawn will be awarded licenses by June 30, 2019, but have not yet set dates for casino openings.

Two other casinos are to be built in Jefferson and Pope counties, though Pope County residents voted against the casino proposals and passed an ordinance mandating a local election to allow a casino before the county judge can support any casino construction.

The Oklahoma-based Quapaw Tribe said it will apply for a casino license and intends to have a functional casino in Pine Bluff by early 2020.
