Hikers visit Lake Fort Smith

Hill 'N Dale Hiking Club will hike on Wednesday at Lake Fort Smith State Park along the Ozark Highlands Trail and Sheppard Springs Loop. Distance is five miles, with an option for a seven-mile hike.

Trail walk about insects

The city of Bella Vista will host a family insect hike at 9:30 a.m. Saturday along the Back 40 trail system. Meet at the Buckingham trailhead, off Trafalgar Road at Buckingham Drive.

The hike is two and a half miles of moderate difficulty. Sim Barrow, an insect expert with a master's degree in entomology, will lead the hike. Back 40 trails are dirt and not suitable for strollers. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome.

Walk explores Siloam Springs

Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, will host a walk on May 23 in Siloam Springs.

Routes of 5- or 10-kilometers are available. Routes are on pavement through neighborhoods and forests.

Meet at Phillips 66, 1295 N. Mount Olive, in Siloam Springs between 9 and 9:30 a.m. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at Bob Henry Park.

Police set fishing derby

The third annual Tontitown and Elm Springs Police departments' Kids Fishing Derby will begin a 8 a.m. June 2 at Rocking Chair Ranch at South Barrington and Arbor Acres Avenue.

Trophies will be awarded for first through third place as well as most fish caught. Door prizes, hot dogs and drinks will be provided after the event. Registration is available at the tournament or forms may be picked up before the event at either police department.

Talk focuses on dams

David Gould, director of the Plymouth, Mass., Department of Marine and Environmental Affairs, will speak at the Ozark Environmental Conversation from 6 to 8 p.m. June 6. The event is at the Arvest Conference Center, North Main Street and Legion Lane, in Bentonville.

Gould will share Plymouth's experience with removal of obsolete dams in that city. He will be joined by Kat Hoenke, ecologist with the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership, and Raven Lawson, Watershed Protection Manager with Central Arkansas Water.

The program is organized by The Friends of Little Sugar Creek and The Ozark Society Sugar Creek chapter. The public is invited.

Cleanup set on West Fork

The 13th annual cleanup along the West Fork of the White River will be at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Volunteers may check in at Walker Park in Fayetteville, Yvonne Richardson Community Center in Fayetteville, Riverside Park in West Fork or Slicker Park in Winslow.

The cleanup will focus on Walker Park, Town Branch, Cato Springs Branch, Dead Horse Mountain Road, Ward's Slough, Baptist Ford, Dye Creek Road, Riverside Park, Brentwood Mountain Road and Slicker Park.

Team wins charity tournament

Steven Meador and Joey Penzo won the NWA Young Life benefit bass tournament held May 6 at Beaver Lake. They weighed five bass totaling 15.6 pounds.

Warren Edwards and Allan Shannon were second with five bass at 15.23 pounds, Wes Usrey and Danny Warren placed third with five bass at 15.06 pounds. Allen Westfall and Jeff Swaffer were fourth with five bass at 12.93 pounds. Justin Carr and Larry Carr were fifth with 12 pounds even.

Westfall and Swaffar had big bass at 5.37 pounds.

Buddy bass benefits hospital

The Fayetteville Auto Park Buddy Bass Fishing Tournament is June 3 out of Prairie Creek park on Beaver Lake. Profits benefit Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Entry fee is $100 per boat. First through third prizes are $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. Fishing is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Waterfowl event features archery

The Christian Waterfowler's Association International Waterfowl Festival is June 8-9 at Cross Church, 1709 Johnson Road, in Springdale.

Events include a 3-D archery competition, duck and goose calling contests, waterfowl cooking contest, vendors and a banquet.

General admission is free, but tickets to the banquet are $25.
