BASEBALL

UAM falls in GAC Tournament

The University of Arkansas at Monticello lost 13-8 to Southwestern Oklahoma State in the first round of the Great American Conference Tournament in Enid, Okla., on Saturday.

Southwestern Oklahoma overcame a 6-1 deficit by scoring six times in the sixth inning and four times in the seventh.

Drake Rowton led Arkansas-Monticello by going 3 for 5 and scoring 1 run. Daniel Richardson led Southwestern Oklahoma by going 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI.

Southwestern Oklahoma (24-22) will meet either Oklahoma Baptist University or Henderson State University at 4 p.m. today. Arkansas-Monticello (30-18) will meet Southern Arkansas at noon today in an elimination game.

Elsewhere, Arkansas Tech (28-21) defeated Southern Arkansas (32-17) 9-3 and will play the winner between Henderson State and Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m. today. Harry Gard and Cody Wescott led the Wonder Boys with three hits, with Wescott having three extra-base hits including a home run.

Hayes Cox (9-3) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 8 innings.

GAC announces post-season honors

Southern Arkansas University's Jacob Richardson and Hunter Vasquez were named player of the year and pitcher of the year respectively by the Great American Conference on Saturday, while the University of Arkansas at Monticello's Jordan Johnson was named freshman of the year and Arkansas-Monticello's John Harvey was named coach of the year.

Richardson led the GAC with 63 RBI and tied Arkansas-Monticello's Sean Wagner for the conference lead in hits (70). Vazquez went 6-3 with a league-leading 2.10 earned-run average. He also led the conference in strikeouts with 93.

Johnson and Harvey helped the Weevils finish as the league's regular-season champions for the first time in program history. Johnson hit .333 and ranked third in the GAC with 11 home runs. He added 48 RBI, tied for sixth best in the conference.

SOFTBALL

Central Arkansas loses at home

The University of Central Arkansas lost 8-3 to Northwestern State in Conway on Saturday, closing out the regular season.

The Bears (28-24, 16-11 Southland Conference) hurt themselves by leaving a season-high 16 runners on base. Despite three hits, the Bears received 14 walks.

Enmma Hawthorne hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to put the Lady Demons (27-23, 14-13) up 4-2. Northwestern State added two unearned runs in sixth inning to push the lead to 8-3.

Maddy Prough (2-3) allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 3 2/3 innings while taking the loss. Rachel Haberman allowed 4 unearned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings.

Central Arkansas is set to play in the Southland Conference Tournament on Tuesday in Lake Charles, La.

Arkansas Tech advances to championship game

Janie Knowles led Arkansas Tech University (42-17) by going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and scored 1 run in the Golden Suns' 6-0 victory over Southern Nazarene in the Great America Conference tournament in Bentonville on Saturday.

With the victory, Arkansas Tech advances to the championship game at noon today against Southern Nazarene, which defeated Southern Arkansas 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. Southern Nazarene needs to win twice to win the tournament.

Megan Goodnight (16-4) allowed 5 hits in 7 innings to get the victory for the Golden Suns

In other action, Marina Duran's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning scored Maeson Grace with the game's only run in Southern Arkansas' 1-0 victory over Harding University (32-26).

Southern Arkansas (52-9) lost 1-0 to Southern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. Mahina Sauer's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning scored Kriston Shumaker for the game's only run.
