Park proposes expanded trails

The National Park Service is proposing to allow bicycle use on two new multiuse trails connecting Pea Ridge National Military Park with other proposed trail routes in adjacent communities.

The first trail would be a 0.55-mile section from U.S. 62 to the visitor center. The second would be a 1.17-mile trail from Arkansas 72 to the Sugar Creek trail on the western edge of the park.

Currently, bicycle use in the park is limited to the tour road. The proposed rule is available for public review and comment online at www.regulations.gov. Search for the regulation identifier number: 1024-AE41. Comments may also be mailed to the park.

The War Eagle Loop of Hobbs State Park's multiuse trails opened Friday after eight months of closure for repairs caused by 2017 floods.

More than one mile of the trail had to be relocated.

Improvements were also made to the trail's War Eagle Creek overlook. Staff and volunteers hauled in 130 split rails and erected a fence.
