LR wants to raise bid limit $25,000

The city of Little Rock wants to increase the dollar amount a contract bid must hit before it is sent to the city Board of Directors for approval.

Right now, any bid that comes in at $25,000 or more has to get board approval. The city manager can authorize payments for services, materials or equipment lower than that.

That dollar amount was set in 2002. Since then, state law has permitted cities to allow purchases up to $75,000 to be approved at the staff level instead of going before the board.

In consideration of that, the Finance Department is requesting to change Little Rock's limit to $50,000 before board approval is needed.

A memo to the board says the Finance Department evaluated purchasing procedures at comparable cities and that the recommendation also reflects current market conditions.

The board will have to approve increasing the limit to $50,000. It is scheduled to vote on the matter at a March 20 meeting.
