A 54-year-old man died early Thursday after his SUV traveled off a Gentry highway and eventually struck two trees, police said.

The crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. as Lionel Lee Myers was traveling north on Arkansas 59 in the Benton County town of Gentry, according to a preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police.

Authorities say Myers' northbound Ford Explorer crossed into oncoming traffic and traveled off the highway before veering into a ditch and hitting trees.

The Gravette resident died as a result of injuries in the crash, according to authorities. No one else was reported hurt.

The weather was listed as clear and roads were said to be dry at the time. At least 199 people have died this year in traffic crash crashes on Arkansas roads, based on preliminary figures from state police.
