Helpers open their hearts

Some 700 American Heart Association supporters helped the nonprofit organization raise $644,500 at "A Night Under the Stars" Heart Ball on May 12 at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers.

Proceeds will help fund research, education and community outreach. The organization awarded $668,000 in research grants in Arkansas in 2017.

For the evening's Open Your Heart campaign for research funding, cardiologist Dr. Michael Green, and Kristi Gray and Jake Springer, heart disease survivors, shared via video their experiences with those gathered.

A class of 31 Sweethearts was presented at this year's ball. The girls are community-minded high school sophomores who spent the past nine months doing community service while learning the importance of a heart-healthy life. The deadline for applications to be in the 2018-19 class of Sweethearts is June 15.

Those helping the Heart Association included Suzy and Chuck Fehlig, Ed Morgan, Julie and Keith Barber, Nancy and Joe Mueller, Mary Ann and David Lattanzio, Cathey and Scott Roberts, Reg Yarbrough and Andy Kaufmann.

Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas lauded this year's 27 scholarship graduates with a graduation celebration May 15 at Sunrise Stage in Fayetteville.

Next up for the scholarship group is the Spark of Hope dinner and awards June 21 at the Fayetteville Town Center. The evening will feature guest speaker Cara Brookins, author and Little Rock native. Spark of Hope awards will be presented to an outstanding individual supporter, corporate partner and student-nominated supportive professor and employer.

Those celebrating graduating seniors included Jim Crouch, Karen Hodges, Janet and Luke Parsch, Melissa and Randy Werner, Tanya Hayes, Gene Anderson, Julie Ellenberger, Amanda Birkinsha, Carla Atkins, Deanna Howard, Ruth Collier, Margaret and Mark Burdette, Bo Bittle, Elaine and David Longer, Doris Cordes and Carolyn Rodeffer.

The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks is a little greener thanks to the 23rd annual Greening of the Garden benefit May 18 at the Garden in Fayetteville. Gains garnered from the greening will help support Garden programs.

Next at the garden will be Art in the Garden on June 15.
