Lonoke woman shot in standoff

A 62-year-old woman was shot by authorities Wednesday night after she barricaded herself in a house and opened fire toward deputies who responded, authorities said.

Janie Bryant was in stable condition Thursday at a Little Rock hospital after being shot at a home in the 400 block of East Holly Street in Lonoke, the Arkansas State Police said.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the home around 8:45 p.m. after a report of shots being fired toward a residence across the street, according to a news release from Lonoke County sheriff's Capt. David Bufford.

As deputies tried to get inside the home, Bryant "reportedly fired a weapon several times at the officers," state police wrote in a separate statement. The deputies returned fire, hitting Bryant. No deputies were injured.

The state police agency is investigating the shooting and will forward findings to the prosecutor to consider whether the use of potentially deadly force was justified.
