Mills Coach Raymond Cooper said one of the best characteristics of the Comets is their unselfishness.
In Friday night's rematch at the Galaxy with rival Little Rock McClellan, the Comets (19-2, 7-0 6A/5A-5) made sure they found senior guard Patrick Greene often in a 85-52 victory over the Crimson Lions. Greene hit seven three-pointers and finished with 30 points for the conference leaders.
"We were trading baskets a lot and we finally started getting some stops,'' said Cooper. "We hit some shots and Patrick Greene got really, really hot and that's just kind of ignited the energy on the team and the energy on the bench and it translated on the defensive end."
Junior guard Branton McCrary, who had 3 three-pointers, scored 14 while Kevin Cross chipped in 9 points and Braylen Clark and Greg Easter had 8 points each.
While the game was a blowout late in the third quarter, the Crimson Lions (6-15, 1-6) proved feisty in the first half. Trailing 16-6, McClellan put on a 8-0 run to close the first quarter and made it 16-14 going into the second.
McClellan hung around for most of the second quarter -- it was 30-23 with 3:41 left -- but the Comets closed the half with a 21-7 run with Greene hitting 3 three-pointers and scoring 14 in the run with the lead growing to 51-30.
Sophomore Eric Woods and junior Ian Robinson led McClellan with 11 points each.
