Boy hurt in crash in south Arkansas dies

A teenager died after the vehicle he was traveling in was struck by a pickup and hit a crane in south Arkansas last month, Arkansas State Police said in a report released Thursday.

The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. Jan. 4 on U.S. 167 in El Dorado, near the Main Street exit, state police said.

A 1999 Toyota traveling south was struck by a 2001 GMC pickup, causing the Toyota to hit a rubber-tired gantry crane, according to the report.

A passenger in the Toyota, 14-year-old Austin Owens of El Dorado, suffered fatal injuries, according to the El Dorado Police Department. Jimmy Owens, 59, who was driving the vehicle, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the agency said.

An obituary published in the El Dorado News-Times says the 14-year-old died Jan. 7.

The weather was clear and roads were dry at the time of the crash, state police reported.
