ROGERS -- Shawn Wright has filed to run for the Position 1, Ward 1 open seat on the City Council.

He decided to run after his father, Buddy Wright, announced he won't seek re-election to the seat, Shawn Wright said. Ward 1 represents the northeast area of Rogers.

"My father has held this position for 20 years and had a great deal of respect and pride for the city of Rogers," Wright said. "I saw firsthand what it meant to be a leader, and I want to do the same."

Wright is a lifelong Rogers resident and has seen the city grow from 20,000 in 1990 to almost 66,000 people today. If elected, his focus would be on city development and public involvement.

"It makes me very proud to see the revitalization efforts taking place downtown and the surrounding areas. It's important to me that we continue that momentum while preserving as much of the history and character of Rogers as possible," Wright said.

Listening to residents' concerns and needs is the biggest asset for community success, and Wright said he would be an open and transparent council member.

"I will always keep an open line of communication. The people here are our biggest asset and I want to give back to the community that raised me," he said.

In 2013, Wright served on the planning committee for the Lake Atalanta and Railyard Bike Park projects. He is a board member for the Rogers Public Education Foundation, which raises money for grants that are given to schools and teachers in the Rogers area.

Three other people, Rick Stocker, Mandy McDonald Brashear and Clint Hopper, have filed to run for the seat as of Friday morning.

Council terms last for four years and pay an annual salary of $9,511.

Friday is the last day to file for municipal office, and the nonpartisan election will be held Nov. 6.
