FAYETTEVILLE -- City leaders want the public's help in shaping a planned arts district downtown.

The cultural arts corridor will link downtown's main attractions along West Avenue, such as the Walton Arts Center, TheatreSquared's new venue, Nadine Baum Studios, the Fayetteville Public Library and the undeveloped Fay Jones Parkland, according to a news release from the city.

The plan will include outdoor elements and streetside enhancements such as plants, art and gathering areas designed to blend nature with the manmade structures downtown. The Walton Family Foundation awarded the city a nearly $1.8 million grant to pay for the corridor's design.

The City Council on June 19 approved a contract with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects of Charlottesville, Va., to do the design work.

The public is invited to help create the final design. City administrators hope to include the corridor in a list of potential projects for a bond vote next year.

Key dates are: Thursday-Saturday, the public gives ideas and designers develop sketches; Oct. 9-12, designers present preliminary concepts and seek public feedback; and December to early next year, designers present a concept with an opportunity for more public comment.

Public comment will be accepted 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Walton Arts Center's Starr Theatre. A station also will be set up at the farmers market on Saturday.
