Local Girl Scout Troop 5114 was one of only 10 troops across the country to be invited to travel to New Jersey to join Always #LikeAGirl and Walmart in a full-day academy of STEM-related (science, technology, engineering and math) confidence-building activities. At the conclusion of the trip, the girls were challenged to create a "Take Action" project pinpointing a problem in their own community that they'd like to tackle, then working toward a sustainable solution using what they had learned. Troop 5114 became concerned about the health and safety of the trees in their local park -- Wilson Park in Fayetteville -- when they began to see the damage done by park-goers when their hammocks were being improperly attached. Realizing that they wanted to ensure that the trees in this park remained healthy and available for future generations, they set out on their "Take Action" project creating and installing hammock and slacklining rules to make sure patrons didn't cause any future damage. Participating Girl Scouts were Karen Smith, Kya Anderson, Kharma Beck and Cheyenne Skolnekovich. Information: Email [email protected].
