San Antonio too much for Northwest Arkansas

SPRINGDALE -- San Antonio pitchers continued to baffle Texas League hitters, downing Northwest Arkansas 5-2 on Monday night at Arvest Ballpark.

Four Missions pitchers combined to allow just three hits. Jesse Scholtens tossed six scoreless innings in his first Texas League start. He allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked one for San Antonio (4-1).

The Missions took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a lead-off single by Overstreet, a double by Michael Gettys and RBI-groundout by River Stevens. They added two more in the fifth on a run-scoring triple by Fernando Tatis Jr. He later scored on a wild pitch by Naturals reliever Jason Adam.

Solo home runs by Overstreet and Austin Allen in the eighth pushed San Antonio's lead to 5-0.

Short Hops

• Northwest Arkansas (1-4) had a big scoring chance in the fourth inning when Lopez led off with a triple, but Erick Mejia, Elier Hernandez and Samir Duenez each struck out to end the threat.

• Allen and Overstreet had a game-high three hits apiece for the Mission, who finished with 11 hits.

• The Naturals scored their only runs on a two-out, two-run double by Duenez in the bottom of the ninth. Both of those runs were unearned.

On Deck: Left-hander Foster Griffin (0-0 3.00 ERA) will start on the mound for Northwest Arkansas, while right-hander Cal Quantrill (0-0 2.46 ERA) will start for San Antonio in a battle of Top 10 prospects. Today's Promotion: It will be the first of three Education Day at Arvest Ballpark as the Naturals play host to San Antonio with the first pitch slated for 11:05 a.m. The Naturals will use the power of baseball to reinforce anti-bullying behavior to schools.
