County Clerk Crane won't seek re-election

Pulaski Circuit/County Clerk Larry Crane announced in an email to his staff Tuesday that he will not seek re-election next year.

No one else has formally announced they will run for the spot. Crane said he expects someone to announce in the next few days, but didn't say who. The filing date for candidates is in February.

The circuit/county clerk previously served a two-year term, but the position will be for four years going forward. The office has an annual salary of $90,783.68.

Crane took office in January 2011. His last day on the job will be Dec. 31, 2018.

"No, I am not sick ... I am healthy as a proverbial horse. No, I am not burned out ... you handle the hard stuff on my behalf every day, so I am darned satisfied. I simply want to go out on top after working for and with government since 1977 ... yep, that's 40 years!" Crane wrote in his email to staff. "I have things I want to do and places I want to see, rivers I want to paddle and camps to make. Thank each of you, though, for making this one of the hardest decisions I have ever faced."

Crane previously worked as assistant attorney general with former state Attorneys General Mike Beebe, Leon Johnson, Mark Pryor and Bill Clinton. He also worked as chief of staff for Pryor and Johnson and as legal counsel to Clinton during his governorship.
