CLASSMATES CELEBRATE

Horace Mann Class of '65 has reunion/birthday party

Members of the Horace Mann High School class of 1965 gathered for a reunion Sept. 2 at the Double Tree hotel. Even though the 52-year mark may seem an unusual milestone to celebrate, 2017 is the year most of the class turned 70, so it was also a birthday celebration, said organizer Johnny Coley.

After posing for a group photo on the front steps of the Robinson Center, the former classmates enjoyed a banquet of steak and chicken in the hotel.

"We've known each other since elementary school," Coley said. "There are classmates from throughout the United States. When people travel so far, the celebrations last at least three to four days. We visit friends and family, [have] cookouts and worship together."

There was no program at the banquet, says Coley, it was just for "friends getting together and enjoying each other."

Horace Mann, built in 1955, was the last all-black high school in Little Rock. It is now the Horace Mann Arts & Science Magnet Middle School. The next Horace Mann Class of '65 reunion will be in 2020.
