Rogers man suspected of breaking into school

BENTONVILLE — Surveillance video captured a Rogers man roaming an elementary school in his underwear, police said.

Juan Hernandez, 19, was arrested Tuesday in connection with commercial burglary, a felony, and criminal mischief. He was released from the Benton County Jail after he posted a $2,500 bond.

Adam Self, Elmwood Middle School resource officer, reviewed video of a incident that occurred over the weekend, according to court documents.

Molly Davis, school principal, told Self someone broke into the school because items had been moved in the counselor’s office, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Self watched a man later identified as Hernandez walk through a hall at 9:09 p.m. Saturday, according to court documents.

At 9:36 p.m. the man appeared to use a key to unlock the counselor’s door, according to court documents. He stepped in the office, which is out of camera range, according to the affidavit.

The man left at 12:17 a.m. wearing only gray underwear and mismatched dark-colored socks. The video shows a fully clothed man leave the counselor’s office at 2:04 a.m. He used a key to enter a few classrooms before he left the building, according to court documents.

Police were able to identify Hernandez after sending his photograph to different schools.

Police got a list of the key fobs used that night, and one teacher reported her fob was missing from her desk.

Police said Hernandez told police he went to the school to use its Wi-Fi, but he didn’t remember going inside. Hernandez said he stood by the south entrance and used the Wi-Fi, according to court documents.

Officers showed Hernandez a still photograph from the video and Hernandez said the person resembled him.

Police questioned Hernandez about the key fob. Hernandez denied knowing what a fob is and told officers he found “a gray plastic thing” when he was using the Wi-Fi, according to court documents.

Hernandez later gave the fob to the officers, according to the affidavit.

Police learned from a School District employee the fob had been used to enter the school.

Hernandez’s arraignment is scheduled for 8 a.m. Oct 2 in Benton County Circuit Judge Robin Green’s courtroom.
