CONWAY-- Mrs. Bell Presley of Martinville, who declares in her complaints that she has borne her husband 17 children since their marriage in Van Buren county, December 7, 1887, has filed suit in Faulkner Chancery Court for divorce from J. R. Presley, alleging cruel treatment. Fourteen of the children, she says are living, of these three are married, 11 are single and 9 are now living with the defendant. The complaint says that the couple lived together until Nov. 1, 1916. Mrs. Presley charges that her husband frequently whipped her and "forced upon her such indignities that rendered her condition in life intolerable."

• Winston Crockett Talley, 28, of North Little Rock, a former convict who helped obtain a federal District Court order that changed the rules governing the use of a leather strap to discipline state penitentiary inmates, was convicted here of burglary and grand larceny. Talley and two other Tucker inmates filed a petition in federal District Court contending that the use of the leather strap constituted cruel and unusual punishment. The petition led to the court order.

• The presence of the Clinton-Gore campaign headquarters has pumped at least an estimated $12 million into the local economy since it opened in May, an employee at the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau said. Increased sales of rooms and meals of several Little Rock hotels and restaurants, thanks largely to presence of campaigners and national and international news media, had pumped an estimated $3 million directly into the city's economy through August, said the source who asked not to be identified.

• Arkansans will have the opportunity to buy designer shoes at a discount on the QVC cable television network and help raise money for cancer research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at UAMS will receive a share of the money raised through the Fashion Footwear Association of New York Shoes on Sale, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT on QVC. The sale, sponsored by the Fashion Footwear Charitable Foundation and QVC, is an annual event to raise money for breast cancer research and education. UAMS, one of the original beneficiaries, was added back to the list of beneficiaries this year with six other cancer centers. Musician Sheryl Crow, a breast-cancer survivor, will perform during the event.
