County backs off rock quarry

FAYETTEVILLE -- Washington County will not take action against a rock mining company that is blasting outside its permitted area, according to County Attorney Brian Lester.

Hamstring Mine

The 45-acre mine is part of several property parcels, county and some state records show. It is on at least 80 acres, but the total property is about 150 acres, according to county records show. Records from the state and the county vary, showing anywhere from 140 acres to 185 acres.

Fast fact

About 536,400 tons were mined from the limestone quarry off Hamstring Road in Farmington from 2012 to 2013.
