UT ARLINGTON

Daniel Estes of Benton-ville received a presidential scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year at the University of Texas at Arlington.

NATIONAL MERIT

SEMIFINALISTS

Benjamin Allen of Bella Vista, a student at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts in Hot Springs, has been named a National Merit semifinalist for the 2017-2018 academic year. To be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program, students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as a junior.

Semifinalists must complete a detailed scholarship application that includes information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

Two local students have been named to the honor rolls for the 2017 summer semester at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Ashlyne Rogers of Van Buren was included on the the president’s list, with a grade-point average of 4.0. Victoria Harris of Bella Vista was listed on the dean’s list, with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Rogers and Erica Kugler of Bentonville are 2017 summer graduates of the University of Alabama, both earning bachelor of arts degrees.

NEW SCHOOL

Pooja Kalyan, a middle- school student at the New School in Fayetteville, has been selected one of 300 semifinalists in the Broadcom MASTERS (math, applied science, technology and engineering rising stars) seventh annual national science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition for middle school students. Her science fair project will be considered as the competition narrows to 30 as Broad-com MASTERS.

At last year’s Northwest Arkansas Regional Science Fair, Kalyan’s science fair project placed first in the animal sciences category, second overall in the junior division and also received a Naval science high school award. Her project looks at the effect of different light sources on the sleeping patterns of mice.

FREED-HARDEMAN

UNIVERSITY

Jacob Moseley of Rogers, a student at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., has been chosen as one of six students to perform in the school’s Ambassador acappella group.

The Ambassadors perform a variety of contemporary and classic Christian music, as well as popular and secular melodies, at youth rallies and churches across the country.

U.S. ARMY

MARCHING BAND

Ethan Andrews, a Bentonville High School senior and drum major of the Benton-ville Pride Marching Band, has been selected for the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band which will perform at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 6 in San Antonio, Texas. Andrews was one of only 125 high school seniors and just eight sousaphone players chosen, according to a news release from the Bentonville Pride Marching Band.

In San Antonio, Andrews will participate in educational sessions with top clinicians from the college and high school ranks, as well as noted drum corps instructors and members of the U.S. Army field band, according to the release.

Andrews also marched with the 300-member Bands of America National Honor Band in the 2017 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

COLLEGE OF SAINT MARY

Caitlin Wells of Rogers received a bachelor of science degree from College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb., during commencement ceremonies May 21.
