University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Northwest, Arkansas Children's Northwest and the Schmieding Developmental Center, UAMS Kids First leaders and supporters gathered for a reception Nov. 9 at the Springdale Country Club to welcome Dr. Rick Barr as the new chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and associate dean for child health at UAMS and pediatrician-in-chief at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Burr told those gathered, "I see my main job being a team builder for child health" to make sure kids have access to quality health care, educate the next generation of health care providers and conduct research.

The UAMS Northwest Arkansas campus marked its 10th anniversary on Nov. 17.

Those welcoming Burr included Robin and Gary George, Betsy Phillips, Al and Dorothy Hanby, Carol Lynn and Don Gibson, Margaret Whillock, Bob Gullett, Carl Collier, Mary Stockland, Hershey Garner,

Sunshine School and Development Center supporters gathered Nov. 10 at the school in Rogers for the annual A Very Special Art Show. Julie Barber, Walmart vice president and divisional merchandise manager of snacks, and Erin McCracken, Nickelodeon retail development senior director, served as honorary chairwomen of the benefit art auction.

Those supporting special art and child development included Chris Jones, Maggie Srygley, Rob Husong, Tammi and Terry Bright, Julie and Michael Anderson, Holly and Jim Breach, Kathy and Joe Farnan, Marcelline and Kirt Wilson, Aneasha and Warren Moore and Denise Davis.

"All of our programs continue to see increased enrollment, and we have added a social worker to our staff so that we can address the behavioral and mental health needs of the children we serve," Cyndi Bilyeu, chief executive officer, said. "We have also expanded our nursing program, as we have seen an increase in the number of medically fragile children enrolled ... Our supporters make it possible for kids to take their first steps, become more kindergarten ready, say their first words, or become more fully integrated in their community."
