Arkansas homeowner shoots, kills 18-year-old intruder, authorities say

A Crittenden County homeowner on Sunday shot and killed an 18-year-old intruder, authorities said Tuesday.

Crittenden County sheriff's deputies and Marion police were dispatched to a home on Marion Lake Road at 3:31 a.m. Sunday after the home's security alarm was activated, according to a sheriff's office news release.

"The alarm company advised that they had made contact with the homeowner and was told that there was an intruder in the home," the release stated.

The homeowner, a woman "in her late 80s" who lives alone, told police she asked the intruder, identified as Cody Smith of Marion, to leave, but he advanced toward her, prompting the woman to shoot him in self-defense.

Smith died after being shot.

Investigators found signs the home had been forcefully entered, the release said. The woman wasn't charged in the shooting death, and authorities are still investigating, a sheriff's office spokesman said Tuesday.

The identity of the homeowner wasn't released.
