31 events set in May to mark state's experience in WWI

Arkansas Heritage Month in May will focus on the theme "A State of War: Arkansas Remembers World War I" with 31 events sanctioned by the Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee. The planned events include lectures, musical performances and exhibits throughout the state.

A complete list of the state's World War I centennial activities and additional information can be found at wwiarkansas.com/calendar-events. Several exhibits will be ongoing throughout the month.

Among the World War I Centennial commemoration events for May are:

• A Hot Springs WWI-era architectural tour and a historic jazz and ragtime concert today in downtown Hot Springs. The concert will be in the Arlington Hotel at 239 Central Ave. and will feature WWI-era tunes.

• "The United States and World War I," a lecture Wednesday by Sandra Keough, will be held in the American Legion Hut at 406 Porter St. in Helena-West Helena.

• "Remembering the State of War in 1917-1918," a display honoring Newton County's WWI doughboys, will open in the Bradley House Museum at 403 Clark St. in Jasper next Tuesday and run through May 11.

• "Fur and Feathers: Animal Heroes of WWI," an exhibit on WWI animals, will open with a reception May 12 in the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home's Vada Sheid Gallery at 1600 S. College St. in Yellville. It will continue through May 31.

• "To Can the Kaiser: Arkansas and the Great War," a lecture by author and historian Mike Polston, is set for May 18 in the Archives and Family Research Center at 123 N. Market St. in Benton.

• "Faithful To Our Tasks: Arkansas's Women and the Great War," a lecture and book-signing by author Elizabeth Griffin Hill, will be May 25 in the Dallas County Museum at 211 N. Main St. in Fordyce.
