Chase Race and Paws

In Conway, the 12th annual Chase Race 2 Mile begins at the park at 8 a.m. Saturday, and the 1-mile Paws Race with leashed pets begins immediately afterward.

These two races are part of the same event, and they will share festivities at Simon Park at 850 Front St. just south of Toad Suck Square downtown.

The Chase Race is the fifth event in the 2017 Arkansas RRCA Grand Prix and the 2-mile championship race for the series. It will be chip-timed using starting and finishing mats. The 1-mile Paws Race will be gun-timed.

Between the two, racers have a shot at 195 awards, so there are lots of opportunities to come out a winner. Also, every human runner who finishes either course will receive a finisher's medal.

$100 cash prizes are up for grabs to anyone setting an overall male or female record in the 2-miler. The male record was set by Wojciech Kopec in 2013 at 9:41 and the female record was set by Leah Thorvilson at 10:42 in 2012. Also, anyone setting an age-group record will receive complimentary entry into the 2018 Chase Race.

Post-race festivities include free food, a pet costume contest, and opportunities to learn about pet adoptions.

The Chase Race and Paws began in 2006 and is held in memory of Donald Lee Chase Potter (1991-2005).

Online registration is available until 4 p.m. Friday. The 2-mile run and the 1-mile Paws Race are $20 each, or both races are available for $30. There is also an option for a family of four to register together for $55. All proceeds are donated to Friends of the Conway Animal Shelter and Arkansas Children's Hospital for brain trauma research.

According to the website, the race has cumulatively earned $135,000 since its inception, split evenly between the two organizations.

Packet pickup is available noon-7 p.m. Friday at Sporty Runner, 1016 Van Ronkle St. Race-day registration and packet pickup will be available on-site 6:30-7:45 a.m. for an extra $5.
