• Sharp County Judge Larry Brown realizes it's a simple slogan, but he also believes that signs at low-water crossings advising motorists, "Turn around. Don't drown," could save lives. Brown plans to erect crossing gates, complete with the warning messages, at four county bridges later this month. He hopes each set of long, metal barricades will deter drivers from crossing flooded roads. Sharp County Road Supervisor Dan Melbourne came up with the idea. He's been working on a crossing-safety plan since January 2005, when a husband and wife drowned after trying to drive through a flooded Piney Creek at a low-water bridge in western Sharp County. This crossing will be the first to have the new barricade, Brown said.
