A man died after having a medical episode in police custody, a Fort Smith Police Department press release reports.
On Wednesday, officers responded to 1440 North 35th Street after the homeowner reported she believed a man was lingering around in her backyard, the press release stated. Officers spoke with Fred Rousseau, 56, and determined he was under the influence of alcohol. Rousseau was placed under arrest for public intoxication.
While escorting Rousseau to a patrol car, officers reported he tensed up and "began exhibiting signs of a serious medical issue." Officers removed handcuffs, began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and asked emergency medical services to respond. Rousseau was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police report Rousseau's family said they were suspicious he had an undiagnosed medical issue.
Rousseau's body has been transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for autopsy. Police report an investigation is ongoing.
