FAYETTEVILLE -- Police arrested Tristen Fernandez, 26, of West Fork in connection with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, officials said.

Yessi Beatriz Rauda Paredes, 24, of Fayetteville was walking along the sidewalk near the intersection of West Wedington Drive and North Gold Club Drive on Wednesday afternoon when a dark-colored Chevrolet Equinox traveling westbound on Wedington jumped the curb, striking and killing her, according to a police press release.

Police found the SUV in the 3980 Wedington Drive shopping area with "damage and evidence consistent with the collision," according to the press release. Fernandez fled.

Fernandez was arrested Wednesday night near the area of West Patrick Street and North Plum Tree Drive.

During his arrest, Fernandez stated he believed he had struck a deer and saw "brown fur flying everywhere," according to the preliminary arrest report.

The investigation is continuing, according to police.
