SPIKES AND STILLETOS

Miss Arkansas fundraiser adds $85,000 to prize kitty

College-age women bearing sashes from their respective preliminary Miss Arkansas pageants mingled with supporters, sponsors and donors at the state pageant's largest annual fundraiser, Spikes and Stilettos, held May 21 at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

The event followed the Miss Arkansas Golf Classic, which drew 100 players. Some 250 people attended the casino-theme Spikes and Stilettos. Besides playing the usual dealer-led table games, patrons could bid on items in a silent auction. For those looking to play on a higher level, a live auction took place at the end of the evening.

Proceeds tipped $85,000 and will go to contestants in the 80th Anniversary Miss Arkansas Pageant, said Miss Arkansas Scholarship Foundation executive director Kristen Glover Belew.

This year's pageant, to be June 17, will break away from its former longtime venue in Hot Springs and will be at Robinson Center Performance Hall. A record-breaking $167,500 in education aid will be awarded, including a $30,000 scholarship to Miss Arkansas 2017, Belew added.

Putting it all together were Belew, Susie Morgan, Janell Mason, Keith Glover, Danielle Crafton, Melinda Spradling, Andy Harris and Jennifer and Jacob Jones.
