Lane closures set for U.S. 70 blasts

Rock blasting along U.S. 70 in Garland County will require closing all lanes for 15-minute intervals beginning today and lasting a week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

All lanes in a mile-long section of the highway in the vicinity of Summit Ridge Road will close for 15-minute intervals between 10 a.m. and noon each day through June 9, excluding the weekend, weather permitting.

Motorists should consider alternate routes, including U.S. 270, the department said.

The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen U.S. 70 to five lanes on the 17.5-mile section between Interstate 30 in Benton and U.S. 70B in Hot Springs. The section primarily has two lanes with some passing lanes now. The project is expected to be complete in late 2018, the department said.
