U.S. 70 work to require lane shifts, closings

Work on U.S. 70 in Saline and Garland counties will require lane closing in multiple areas of the work zone for three days beginning Thursday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

A traffic shift will require the westbound lane to be closed between the Interstate 30/U.S. 70 interchange and Crossroads Road in Saline County from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed pavement, the department said. Traffic will be flagged for less than 30 minutes during the shift.

The westbound lane will be closed from about 1 mile east of Ohana Terrace to 1 mile west of Boekah Street in Garland County from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Crews will be relocating a barrier wall along U.S. 70.

The eastbound and westbound lanes will alternately be closed from about 1 mile west of Arkansas 128 to a half mile east of Arkansas 88 in Garland and Saline Counties from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Within this work zone, crews will be leveling asphalt west of Arkansas 128 and removing and replacing pavement striping east of Highway 88.

Flagging operations will control traffic within the work zones, but the department said motorists should consider alternate routes, including U.S. 270.

The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen 17.5 miles of U.S. 70 to five lanes from Interstate 30 in Benton to U.S. 70B in Hot Springs. It is now two lanes with some passing lanes. The project is expected to be complete late next year.
