Springdale water main repaired and tested

SPRINGDALE -- A water main that burst last week has been repaired and found to be sound, according to a city official.

The testing on the integrity and the water quality of the repaired 36-inch line is completed, Melissa Reeves, public relations coordinator for the city, said in a news release issued Tuesday.

The line broke around 4 a.m. Thursday between 420 and 412 Park St. near Luther George Park. Park Street runs from Emma Avenue toward the south part of the city.

The Beaver Water District reported to the city at 4:07 a.m. the tank level in the Springdale system was falling quickly, which indicated a severe leak, an earlier city news release stated.

Springdale Water Utilities officials had the problem under control by about 6 a.m., said Heath Ward, utility director.

More than 1 million gallons gushed out of the broken line and briefly caused low water pressure for Northwest Regional Medical Center and businesses such as George's Inc. and Cargill.

Springdale public schools closed for that day so workers could clean all geothermal systems, disassemble and clean all flush valves, toilets, sinks and water fountains and flush the boiler systems in all the kitchens.
