Bridge work to close I-49 periodically

Crews hanging bridge beams across a section of Interstate 49 in Bentonville will require closing all lanes in both directions for 15-minute periods overnight next week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The periodic lane closures in a milelong section in the vicinity of Central Avenue/Arkansas 72 will begin at 12:01 a.m. Monday and continue nightly through Saturday.

The early Monday period will last until 6 a.m., weather permitting. The time period in which the lane closures will occur on subsequent nights is 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., weather permitting.

Traffic will be handled by the Arkansas State Police, and advance warning signs will be placed to notify traffic approaching the closure, the department said. The agency said motorists should be cautious traveling in the work zone and are encouraged to find an alternate route to avoid the lane closures.

The work is part of a $27.7 million project to widen 3.5 miles of I-49 to six lanes from four between U.S. 62/Arkansas 102 and Arkansas 72. The project is expected to be completed before the end of the year, the department said.
