Baketball: Prairie Grove uses second-quarter spurt to defeat Lincoln

LINCOLN -- One scoring burst was all Prairie Grove needed against Lincoln on Friday.

The Lady Tigers used a 9-1 surge in the second quarter to pull ahead and defeat Lincoln 50-36 Friday in 3A/4A District 1 action at the Wolf Den. Senior Camree Bartholomew and sophomore Emily Grant each finished with 13 points for Prairie Grove (7-14), which has struggled with its shooting all season.

Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud shuffled players into the lineup four and five at a time in the first half in an effort to find some consistent scoring. The Lady Tigers began to click with a 9-1 run that began with a 3-point basket from sophomore Meliah Hutsell. Two steals led to two more baskets before Bartholomew put in a shot high off the glass to put Prairie Grove ahead 22-14.

Prairie Grove increased its lead to as much as 13 points in the second half. Parker Lopez added 10 points for the Lady Tigers, who lost 47-38 at Shiloh Christian on Tuesday.

"We've tried about everything we could do, so I decided to give some people an opportunity," Froud said of his rotation strategy on Friday. "The girls came in with a lot of energy and we were able to keep some people fresh for the second half.

"Meliah made a big three from the corner, we got two steals there real quick, and got a lead and that's where it kind of stayed at."

Lincoln (4-20) played its fourth game under interim coach Stan Carver, who took over after head coach Brian Davenport was relieved of his head coaching duties. The Lady Wolves could get no closer than seven points after being outscored 18-11 in the second quarter.

"Kendra Cummings got in foul trouble and she's our primary ball-handler and senior leader," Carver said. "Once she went out, it was tough to recover. We had some quick turnovers and they didn't seem to miss."

Cummings had 10 points for Lincoln, which has lost 11 of its last 12 games.

Prairie Grove had a final opportunity to win following a timeout, but Will Pridmore's shot bounced off the rim as time expired. Pridmore scored 20 points to lead the Tigers.
